How to Play Tennis: Rules and Basics
Overview of Tennis
- Tennis can be played by either two players (singles) or four players (doubles).
- Matches occur on various surfaces, including grass, clay, hard court, and carpet.
- The objective is to hit the ball over the net into the opponent's court; failing to return it results in a point loss.
Scoring System
- Matches are typically played in best-of-three or best-of-five set formats.
- Best-of-three requires winning two sets.
- Best-of-five requires winning three sets.
- To win a set, a player must win at least six games with a margin of two games.
- Points are scored as follows: love (0), fifteen (1), thirty (2), forty (3). A score of 40-40 is called "deuce."
Game Mechanics
- In deuce situations, a player must win two consecutive points to secure the game.
- If both players reach 6 games each in a set, a tiebreaker is played where the first to 7 points wins.
- The final set does not have a tiebreaker; players must win by at least two games.
Serving Rules
- The match begins with a coin toss that determines who serves first and from which side.
- Servers alternate serving from different sides of the baseline without stepping over it before hitting the ball.
- A double fault occurs if the server fails twice to serve correctly, resulting in losing the point.
Gameplay Regulations
- Players lose points if they fail to return balls correctly or allow them to bounce twice before returning.
- If any part of a player's body touches the net during play, their opponent earns the point automatically.
Let Situations
- A "let" occurs when:
- The ball hits the net but lands in the correct service box,
- It contacts an opponent before hitting ground,
- The server strikes before their opponent is ready.
