What is Landscape?
Understanding Landscape Elements
- The landscape encompasses everything visible around us during a journey, including both natural and artificial elements.
- Natural elements include mountains, rivers, lakes, and valleys, while artificial elements consist of roads, buildings, tunnels, and bridges.
Types of Landscapes
Mountain Landscape
- Characterized by elevations known as mountains; each mountain has three parts: the peak (top), the slope (side), and the base. A group of mountains is called a "sierra," while a series of sierras forms a "cordillera."
Plain Landscape
- Defined by vast flat areas with minimal elevation changes; this terrain supports agricultural development and urbanization due to ease of construction for roads and cities.
Coastal Landscape
- Where land meets sea; can be flat like beaches or steep like cliffs. Features include islands (land surrounded by water) and peninsulas (land connected to mainland on one side). When land extends into the sea, it’s termed a cape; when water extends into land, it's referred to as a gulf or bay for smaller inlets.
Summary of Key Points
- Landscapes contain both natural and human-made elements.
- Three primary types discussed: mountain landscapes, plain landscapes, and coastal landscapes. Each type has distinct characteristics that influence human activity and environmental interaction.
