Learn Chinese for Beginners | Beginner Chinese Lesson 1: Self-Introduction in Chinese Mandarin 1.1
Introduction to Basic Chinese: Lesson 1
Self-Introduction in Chinese
The lesson begins with the instructor introducing herself as Lily and encouraging viewers to follow along with blue characters for better understanding.
The phrase "你好" (nǐ hǎo) is introduced as a way to say hello, literally meaning "you good." It implies a friendly greeting.
Explanation of tone changes in Mandarin: when two third tones are together, the first one shifts to a second tone while still being written as a third tone.
Structure of Chinese Names
A typical Chinese name consists of a last name followed by a first name. The last name usually has one character, while the first name can have one or two characters.
Examples provided include Bruce Lee's name (李小龙 - Li Xiaolong), where 李 is the last name and 小龙 means "little dragon," and Jackie Chan's (成龙 - Cheng Long), meaning "to become a dragon."
Introducing Yourself
Two ways to introduce oneself in Chinese are presented:
我姓 (Wǒ xìng...) for stating your last name.
我叫 (Wǒ jiào...) for stating your full or first name.
Example sentences are given:
For Bruce Lee: 我姓李 (Wǒ xìng Lǐ).
For Lily: 我叫好莉 (Wǒ jiào Hǎo Lì).
Name Introduction Rules
When introducing names, if the first name has only one character, it cannot be used alone; instead, use the full or nickname form.
Review of how to introduce oneself using both structures is encouraged.
Practice Session
Viewers are prompted to practice their introductions by saying their own names following the structure provided.
