LIVE Copy Critique - How To Write Insanely Better Headlines, Ads and Subject Lines
Writing a Hot Ad or Headline
In this video, Alex takes us through one of her favorite copywriting exercises ever. She critiques the copy from reMarkable and six other variations that were submitted by the Posse community. She breaks down what made them great, what left her wanting more, and what could make them even more powerful.
Critique of reMarkable's Original Copy
- The hook used in the ad directly calls out notebook hoarders.
- The selling point is to keep all of your work on a single slim device.
- Most people who are drawn to the reMarkable want to maintain that distraction-free experience of writing on paper but without all that clutter and disorganization.
- The call to action is "Order yours today, perfect for paper people".
- Swap the order of those two statements so that it says "Perfect for paper people, order yours today". That way the very last thing the person reads is a call to action.
Three Step Formula for Writing a Hot Ad or Headline
- Hook attention by starting with a concept or idea that really grabs the reader's attention either by provoking an emotion like fear, joy, FOMO, nostalgia or promising a desired result or clear USP (unique selling proposition).
- Make it relevant by making sure your ad speaks directly to your target audience and their needs.
- Make it clear and concise by using simple language and avoiding jargon or buzzwords.
Posse Submissions Critique
In this section, the speaker critiques six ads that were selected because they received the most amount of likes or votes from the Posse community.
Ad 1
- The ad is great but needs proper punctuation and grammar.
- The pain point could be more concise. Instead of "Exhausted from flipping through pages?", it could be "Tired of losing your notes?".
- Remove the cliche phrase "with the touch of your finger" and make a stronger CTA like "Order yours today".
Ad 2
- Focus on specifics with fewer words and avoid making it too cute.
- Change the main hook to "Who says your notes can't go digital?" for clarity.
- Use a stronger benefit than having a noticeable bulge in the bag, such as taking notes everywhere without extra weight.
Ad 3
- The ad is well done with a crisp message that makes sense.
