Optimistic Nihilism
Introduction
The introduction discusses how human existence is scary and confusing, and how we have learned more about the world and ourselves over time.
Human Existence
- A few hundred thousand years ago, humans became conscious and found themselves in a strange place.
- As we learned more about the world, we discovered that we are not at the center of the universe.
- We also learned that we are made up of many little dead things, which make up bigger things that are not dead.
- We live on a moist speck of dust moving around a medium-sized star in a quiet region of one arm of an average galaxy.
The Universe
- The observable universe is only one part of thousands that make up what we call the universe.
- The size of the universe is too big for our brains to comprehend.
- In the end, the universe itself will die and nothing will ever change again.
Time
This section discusses time and how much time we have in our lives.
Our Time
- If you're lucky enough to live to one hundred, you have five thousand two hundred weeks at your disposal.
- If you're twenty-five now, then you have three thousand nine hundred weeks left.
- Close your eyes. Count to 1. That's how long forever feels.
Death
- Your biological processes will break down, and eventually there will be no you left.
- Our videos induce existential dread in many people.
Optimistic Nihilism
This section offers a different way of looking at things, an unscientific, subjective point of view, the philosophy of Kurzgesagt.
Philosophy
- It seems very unlikely that 200 trillion trillion stars have been made for us.
- If the universe ends in heat death, every humiliation you suffer in your life will be forgotten.
- If our life is all we get to experience, then it's the only thing that matters.
Purpose
- If the universe has no purpose, then we get to dictate what its purpose is.
- Humans will most certainly cease to exist at some point, but before we do, we get to explore ourselves and the world around us.
The Universe is a Playground
In this section, the speaker talks about how we are free in a universe-sized playground and encourages us to aim for happiness and build a utopia in the stars.
Aim for Happiness
- We are free in a universe-sized playground, so we might as well aim to be happy and to build some kind of utopia in the stars.
- We have no idea what consciousness is or if we are alone in the universe. But we can try to find some answers.
- There is no reason not to have fun and live as happy as possible.
Do Good Things
- Do the things that make you feel good. You get to decide whatever this means for you.
- Bonus points if you made the life of other people better. More bonus points if you help build a galactic human empire.
Overall, the speaker encourages us to enjoy our time on Earth and strive for happiness while also doing good things for ourselves and others.
