This video provides an overview of the population, physical features, historical events, and political conflicts in East Asia and Southeast Asia.
Population and Physical Features
- East Asia has a population of 1.6 billion, which is 21.5% of the world's total population. Six countries are located in this region: Mongolia, China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea.
- Southeast Asia has a population of 686 million, which is 8.58% of the world's total population. There are 11 countries in this region including Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
- The Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and flows entirely through China. The Mekong and Irrawaddy Rivers dominate Southeast Asia. The Altai Mountains separate East Asia from Russia while the Himalayas separate it from South Asia.
Historical Events
- About 10,000 years ago seven culture groups started to emerge in China. Some early humans stayed in China while others who had knowledge about coastal lines continued their journey towards Southeast Asia.
- Political landscape in East Asia was dominated by China under Han dynasty from 206 BC to 220 AD known as Golden Ages for great economic development.
- Trade links between East and South Asian regions brought two religions to Southeast Asian region - Hinduism and Islam.
- Japan became a colonial power after World War II but was defeated later on leading to independence for many countries in both regions.
Political Conflicts
Conflict between China and India
- Territorial dispute between China and India over the Line of Actual Control (LAC), a contested border between these two countries.
- In 1962, the countries had war against each other where India was defeated. In 1996, both countries signed an agreement which prohibited the exchange of fire across the border. However, in 2020, Galvan Valley battle resulted in loss of lives while clashes were also reported in 2021.
Conflict between China and Japan
- Island is a bone of contention between these two countries. One demonstration of military in Taiwan made Japan perceive China as a threat.
- Japanese people are widely aware of the need to enhance its defense capability and its role in alliances with U.S.

- Chinese president Xi Jinping says that reunification with Taiwan will be fulfilled even with possible use of force.
- Taiwan was being ruled by Zing Dynasty until it was taken by Japan in 1895. After World War II, China reoccupied the island but there has been a separatist movement since then.

- North Korea conducted short missile test targeting South Korea leading to South Korea moving towards enhancing production of nuclear weapons to maintain balance of power.
