Billy Go’s Beginner Korean Course | #48: To and From
Saying 'To' and 'From' in Korean
In this lesson, we learn how to say 'to' and 'from' a person or location in Korean. We also learn about the particles 한테 and 한테서, which are more commonly used than 에게 and 에게서.
Using 에게 and 에게서
- To say 'to' a person, use 에게 after the person. For example: 빌리 씨에게 줬어요. (I gave it to Billy.)
- To say 'from' a person, use 에게서 after the person. For example: 빌리 씨에게서 선물을 받았어요. (I got a present from Billy.)
- The verb 듣다 meaning 'to listen' is an exception and conjugates as 들어요 or 들었어요 in the past tense.
- When saying 'from' a person, the 서 is optional.
Using 에서 and 까지 for Locations
- Use 에서 to mean 'from' a location and 까지 to mean 'as far as' or 'until' a location.
- For example: 집에서 학교까지 갔어요. (I went from home to school.) 은행까지 가 주세요. (Please go to the bank.)
- The particle 까지 means that someone goes up until but no farther than a location.
Using 한테 and 한테서 instead of 에게 and 에게서
- 한테 and 한테서 are less formal particles used more commonly in everyday speech.
- Use 한테 instead of 에게 to say 'to' a person. For example: 아빠한테 주고 싶어요. (I want to go give it to dad.)
- Use 한테서 instead of 에게서 or just 한테, like we learned how we can just use 에게, to say 'from' a person. For example: 누구한테 받았어요? (Who did you get that from?)
- Note that 한테 and 한테서 should not be used in formal situations.
Pronouncing the Consonant 히읗 (ㅎ)
- The consonant 히읗 (ㅎ) is softer than an 'H' in English and disappears before the consonant 이응 (ㅇ).
- If a regular consonant comes before or after 히읗 (ㅎ), that regular consonant will become pronounced as a strong consonant.
- Any time 히읗 (ㅎ) comes before or after any consonant in Korean when speaking, it will get softer or even disappear completely.
- Examples include 전화 being pronounced like 저놔 and 감히 being pronounced like 가미.
