Superlative Adjectives – English Grammar Lessons

ESL Library

This section introduces the topic of superlative adjectives and their usage in English.

What are adjectives?

  • Adjectives describe nouns and provide information about size, age, opinion, or feelings.

Superlative Adjectives

  • Superlative adjectives are used to compare three or more people, places, or things. They indicate how one noun is different from the rest.
  • Examples: "She is the tallest girl in the group," "This painting is the most beautiful of all," "He is the happiest student in my class."

Formation of Superlative Adjectives

  • One-syllable adjectives: Add "the" and -est to the adjective. If it ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern, double the final consonant before adding -est. Example: "short" becomes "the shortest," "big" becomes "the biggest."
  • Two-syllable adjectives ending in -y: Change -y to -i and add -est. Example: "hungry" becomes "the hungriest," "noisy" becomes "the noisiest."
  • Adjectives with two syllables or more: Use "the most" before the adjective. Example: "modern" becomes "the most modern," "expensive" becomes "the most expensive."
  • Irregular forms: Some adjectives like good/bad/far have irregular superlative forms such as best/worst/farthest (or furthest).

Sentence Pattern for Superlative Adjectives

  • The most common sentence pattern for superlative adjectives is subject + verb + "the" + superlative adjective + object.
  • Examples: "The blue house is the biggest house on the street," "Rock music is the best kind of music," "My dog is the laziest pet in my house," "The singer is the most famous member of the band," "These boots are the most expensive shoes in my closet."

Practice

  • Look at an adjective and say or write its superlative form. Example: tall -> the tallest.
  • Encourage viewers to practice forming superlative adjectives on their own.
