Electrification: Understanding the Phenomenon
What is Electrification?
- Electrification is defined as the phenomenon where a body acquires electric charge by gaining or losing electrons.
- There are three methods to electrify a body: friction, induction, and contact, which involve gaining, losing, or rearranging electric charges.
- The number of electrons lost by one body equals the number gained by another during these processes.
Methods of Electrification
Friction
- Friction involves rubbing two neutral bodies together; one transfers electrons to the other due to frictional force.
- The body that accepts electrons becomes negatively charged, while the one that loses electrons becomes positively charged.
Contact
- Contact electrification occurs when an electrified body touches a neutral body; electrons transfer from the charged object to the neutral one.
- Both bodies become electrified after this interaction.
