The bar-tailed godwit experiences a unique migration, likened to an extended road trip without breaks or food, lasting 9 days and nights.
There are multiple subspecies of bar-tailed godwits, with variations in breeding and migratory patterns based on geographical location.
Breeding and Feeding Habitats
These birds breed across Arctic regions during summer, including Alaska, Siberia, and northern Europe, favoring wetland areas for nesting.
Their diet consists of crustaceans, worms, bugs, and bivalves found in mudflats; they migrate south for winter to coastal habitats rich in food resources.
Migration Patterns
The European subspecies migrates shorter distances (1500 to 2000 km), while the 'baueri' subspecies undertakes a remarkable non-stop flight of approximately 11,690 km from Alaska to New Zealand.
This migration can take 8 to 10 days without stopping for rest or food; deviations can occur if they are blown off course.
Reasons Behind Migration
The primary motivation for their long migration is seasonal climate change; they leave Alaska in fall to escape harsh winters for milder conditions in New Zealand.
Both breeding grounds and winter habitats provide abundant food sources essential for raising chicks and preparing for return flights.
Physiological Adaptations
To sustain prolonged powered flight, bar-tailed godwits undergo significant physiological changes: they reduce body weight by shrinking digestive organs before migration.
They absorb up to a quarter of their organ tissue pre-flight and regrow it upon arrival at their destination. Flight muscle mass increases significantly during this time.
Mysteries of Migration
Despite understanding some physical adaptations, questions remain about their ability to sleep during flight and how they navigate vast oceanic expanses.
While some animals can sleep with half their brain active during travel, it's unclear if bar-tailed godwits possess similar capabilities.

The bar-tailed godwit makes the longest nonstop flight of any bird: From Alaska to New Zealand. And they have to shrink their organs to do it.
