Neurological Examination: Coordination and Gait Assessment
Coordination Assessment Techniques
- The final part of the neurological examination focuses on assessing coordination and gait. The examiner instructs the patient to touch their index finger to a specific line on the surface multiple times quickly.
- The same exercise is repeated with the patient's other hand, emphasizing rapid movement as if changing a light bulb. This tests fine motor skills and coordination.
- Another method involves having the patient mimic movements in a mirror-like fashion, enhancing assessment of bilateral coordination. The patient is also asked to tap their toes rapidly against the floor.
Gait Evaluation Procedures
- To assess gait, patients are instructed to walk normally first, then on tiptoes, followed by walking on their heels. This comprehensive approach evaluates balance and stability during different locomotion styles.
