Future Progressive – Grammar & Verb Tenses

Ellii Future Progressive: Understanding Verb Tenses

What are Verb Tenses?

  • Verb tenses indicate the timing of actions. The simple future and future progressive are two types of verb tenses used to express future actions.
  • Simple future is used for short, immediate actions, while the future progressive is utilized for longer, ongoing actions.

Examples of Simple Future vs. Future Progressive

  • In "I will call my friend tomorrow," the phrase "will call" represents a short action (simple future).
  • Conversely, in "My friend and I will be talking for quite a while," "will be talking" indicates a long action (future progressive).

Forming the Future Progressive

  • The structure for forming the future progressive includes "will," "be," and an -ing verb. For example: “I will be doing my homework.”
  • Commonly, we use the future progressive to show when a short action interrupts a long action; e.g., “I will be studying when the TV show starts.”

Using Clauses with Future Progressive

  • A clause consists of a subject and verb; independent clauses can stand alone while dependent clauses cannot.
  • Example: In “He will be sleeping when his roommate gets home,” “He will be sleeping” is independent, while “when his roommate gets home” is dependent.

Practical Applications of Future Progressive

  • Example sentences illustrate usage: “Their dog will be napping when they get home after school.”
