Question #5: Have you found your hedgehog -- your personal hedgehog?

Living in the Intersection of Three Circles

In this section, the speaker introduces the concept of living in the intersection of three circles and explains what each circle represents.

Passionate About It

  • The first circle represents something that you are passionate about and love to do.
  • When you wake up in the morning, you think to yourself, "I so hope I get a long life because there's nothing I'd rather be doing than what I am doing."

Encoded For It

  • The second circle represents something that you are encoded for, made for, constructed for, or put here for.
  • This is different from what you might be good at. You may need to find a different Hedgehog if your passion does not align with your genetic makeup.

Economic Engine

  • The third circle represents an economic engine that allows you to make a living and fund your BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals).
  • If all three circles intersect, then you have found your Hedgehog.

Leading Out of Your Hedgehog

  • When you lead out of your Hedgehog, it is part of the wellspring of incredible irrational endurance to persist.

Jim's Seven Questions: Learning from Young Leaders Question #5: Have you found your hedgehog -- your personal hedgehog? In 2012 and 2013, Jim had the honor to serve as the Class of 1951 Chair for the Study of Leadership at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He came away from the experience inspired by the young women and men he had met, and learned from. In 2015, he consolidated his reflections into a talk for the Global Leadership Summit, organized into seven questions. While its message speaks to leaders of all ages, Jim developed the talk with those under age 35 very much in mind. Learn more at http://www.jimcollins.com
