Understanding Network Types

Overview of Network Types

  • The video discusses three main types of networks essential for exams: WANs (Wide Area Networks), LANs (Local Area Networks), and PANs (Personal Area Networks).
  • Standalone computers, which are not connected to any network, can benefit from networking through file sharing, peripheral sharing (like printers), and enhanced communication options.

Local Area Networks (LAN)

  • A LAN covers a small geographical area, typically within a single site or building. The hardware is usually owned by the organization using it.
  • LAN connections often utilize UTP cables, fiber-optic cables, or wireless communication via Wi-Fi.

Wide Area Networks (WAN)

  • WANs cover larger geographical areas and connect multiple LANs together. They rely on infrastructure managed by telecommunications companies.
  • Connections in WAN may include telephone lines, fiber optic cables, or satellite links.

Home Networking Devices

  • In home networks, a single device known as a router often combines the functionalities of a wireless access point, switch, and router into one unit.

Personal Area Networks (PAN)

  • A PAN is used for data transmission among localized devices like cell phones and laptops. Bluetooth is the most common technology used in PAN with a short range of about 10 meters.
