Tipos de Reproducción
Reproduction: Types and Processes
Overview of Reproduction
- The lesson focuses on the concept of reproduction, highlighting two main types: sexual and asexual.
- Key characteristics and examples of each type will be discussed, with special attention to human reproduction.
Sexual Reproduction
- In sexual reproduction, two progenitors are involved, utilizing gametes (reproductive cells). The male gamete is sperm, while the female gamete is the ovum.
- This process primarily occurs in eukaryotic organisms; however, some prokaryotes can transfer genetic information without gametes.
- Fertilization can occur internally (within one progenitor) or externally (in the environment). Examples include rainbow trout demonstrating external fertilization.
Asexual Reproduction
- Asexual reproduction involves only one organism, resulting in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent. This method is evolutionarily older than sexual reproduction.
- An example from plants includes strawberry plants producing runners (stolons) for propagation.
- In animals, planarians exhibit asexual reproduction through fragmentation; when cut into pieces, each fragment can develop into a new individual.
