Understanding the Ulnar Nerve
In this section, we explore the anatomy and functions of the ulnar nerve originating from the brachial plexus.
Anatomy and Function of the Ulnar Nerve
- The ulnar nerve emerges from the brachial plexus, extending from cervical roots to thoracic vertebrae. It plays a crucial role in innervating various muscles.
- This nerve travels through the anterior arm, forearm, and reaches the hand, providing innervation to muscles like the flexor cubital and deep finger flexors.
- Apart from motor functions, the ulnar nerve also contributes to sensory perception in the fourth and fifth fingers, as well as parts of the palm and back of the hand.
Pathway and Sensory Distribution
- Originating from the brachial plexus, it descends through the axilla before traversing along the anterior and medial aspects of the arm towards its namesake bone, "cubitus."
- The ulnar nerve extensively covers sensation in areas like the hypothenar eminence (pinky side) of hand both on palmar and dorsal surfaces.
