The Power of Technology

Introduction to the Topic

  • The speaker begins by discussing their approach to preparing the talk, noting a tendency to start from the end and express impatience.
  • They introduce the central theme: technology itself is neutral; it is an instrument whose power lies in how humans choose to use it.

Responsibility and Fear

  • The speaker emphasizes that with power comes responsibility, highlighting a common tendency to blame external factors (technology, society, etc.) rather than self-reflecting.
  • They discuss fear as an evolutionary emotion that prepares us for challenges, suggesting that understanding our emotions can help manage technology's impact on our lives.

Conscious Use of Technology

  • The importance of awareness in using technology is stressed; conscious usage allows individuals to make informed choices about their devices.
  • A debate arises regarding whether technologies are inherently good or bad; ultimately, it is human behavior that determines their effects.

Access to Information vs. Knowledge

  • Technologies facilitate easy access to information but at a cost; true knowledge requires deeper engagement and understanding beyond mere data retrieval.
  • The speaker compares information acquisition to slow cooking—wisdom develops through patience and thorough exploration of topics.

Instant Gratification and Frustration Tolerance

  • Modern technologies provide instant gratification, making desires easily attainable but potentially diminishing resilience when faced with real-life challenges.
  • This ease can lead to difficulties in managing frustration when immediate results are not achievable in other areas of life.

Relationships and Intimacy

  • Technology enhances communication but raises questions about the quality of relationships; intimacy involves respect for differences and genuine connection beyond superficial interactions.

Understanding Intimacy and Technology's Impact on Self-Worth

The Nature of Relationships

  • In relationships, the initial phase often feels ideal, where individuals project their desires onto each other. Over time, disillusionment can occur as true selves are revealed.
  • True intimacy involves recognizing both the best and worst aspects of ourselves and our partners, fostering a deeper connection.

Technology's Role in Self-Esteem

  • Social media influences self-worth by providing validation through likes and followers, leading to a perception that value is tied to external metrics.
  • The concept of "self-esteem" emphasizes personal valuation; technology often distracts from internal appreciation by focusing on external validation.

The Dichotomy of Ideal vs. Real Self

  • Technology allows users to curate their identities, often aligning with an ideal self rather than reflecting reality. This creates a disconnect between one's real self and the persona presented online.
  • There is a risk of neglecting one's true identity due to excessive focus on social media portrayals, leading to feelings of emptiness.

Balancing External Engagement with Internal Reflection

  • Acknowledging that while technology offers endless possibilities for connection, it can also lead to losing touch with one’s inner self if overused.
  • While technology can provide temporary relief from stress or anxiety, it may not address underlying issues effectively.

Conscious Use of Technology

  • Mindful engagement with technology can help alleviate mental fatigue but should be balanced; excessive use may weaken cognitive functions.
  • Awareness is crucial—understanding how we use technology empowers us to make better choices regarding our mental health and emotional well-being.

Jose Moreno is responsible for the Technology Addiction Care Service of the Community of Madrid. Moreno confirms that there is such a debate, adding that "it has been ruled out to include this addiction or behavioural disorder in dsm5, the diagnostic manual for psychologists." The reason, according to this training psychologist, is that "there is a big difference with other addictions and is that the healthy point is not zero consumption". This maxim has become a badge for the service he runs, a place that despite the fact that its name "generates some qualms", according to Carmen Blázquez, psychologist of the service, aims to instill among young people that "social networks are not bad, but their abuse Oh, yes."
