Features of Al-Aqsa Mosque: The Minaret of Bab al-Esbat
Overview of the Minaret
- The minaret, known as the Minaret of Bab al-Esbat, is located on the northern arcade of Al-Aqsa Mosque between the gates of Bab al-Esbat and Bab al-Hutta.
- It is also referred to as the Salahiyya Minaret due to its proximity to the Salahiyya School, which was converted into St. Anne's Church during the Ottoman period.
Historical Background
- Constructed during the reign of Sultan Al-Ashraf Sha'ban in 769 AH (1067 AD), it features a square base similar to other minarets in Al-Aqsa.
- In the Ottoman era, it was rebuilt in a cylindrical style, making it unique as the only cylindrical minaret within Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Structural Details and Damage
- The height of this minaret is approximately 28.5 meters; however, it suffered damage from an earthquake in 1346 AH (1927 AD).
