Tableros de partículas y de fibras (II parte)
Overview of Board Manufacturing Process
Types of Boards and Initial Stages
- The transcript discusses different types of boards, highlighting their finer and more homogeneous constitution. It notes that many boards will be used as is, while others will undergo further enhancement with wood veneers.
- A significant portion of the boards will be covered with paper impregnated in melamine, referred to as melamine boards. This process replaces traditional wood veneers with colored paper that mimics wood.
Melamine Impregnation Process
- The paper used for melamine boards has a weight of around 80 grams per square meter. It is unwound and submerged in melamine at the start of the melaminization line.
- After impregnation, the paper becomes fragile but can adhere to any type of board. The melamine acts both as an adhesive and a surface finish when applied to both sides of the board.
Pressing and Quality Control
- The boards are then pressed under heat and pressure to ensure proper adhesion. A scanner checks the quality of the finished product immediately after pressing.
- Before commercialization, all products undergo rigorous quality control tests, including formaldehyde content determination and various resistance tests (flexural strength, tensile strength, abrasion resistance).
Industry Impact
- Since their introduction in the early 20th century, particleboards (agglomerated boards) and MDF (medium-density fiberboard) have become essential components in furniture manufacturing and woodworking industries.
