Unspoken Spoken - a new dance film from Candoco Dance Company

A Creative Classroom Experience

The Beginning of Imagination

  • The scene opens in a classroom where students lie on the floor, gazing at the ceiling while their teacher outlines their shapes with chalk.
  • The classroom floor is compared to a tray of gingerbread cookie cutters, emphasizing the playful and creative atmosphere.
  • Students are instructed to draw within their chalk outlines, establishing boundaries for creativity.

Breaking Boundaries

  • A girl challenges the teacher's instruction by adding features like a tail and antlers to her outline, symbolizing defiance against limitations.
  • Her actions trigger a wave of inspiration among classmates, leading them to expand beyond their original outlines.
  • The transformation from cookie-cutter shapes into imaginative creations illustrates how creativity can flow freely when encouraged.
Video description

Our new film Unspoken Spoken, directed and choreographed by Fin Walker, performed by disabled and non-disabled dancers. We encounter five characters, each with his or her own rules to question, to surrender to, to fight against. Some younger, some older, they ask us to look deeper, to explore our own boundaries. What changes if we face up to what is holding us back? Featuring Jess Dowdeswell, a 14-year old who dances without her wheelchair, and Jemima Hoadley, who narrates the story through British Sign Language, voice and movement, Unspoken Spoken exposes the potential that exists when we dare to challenge the rules. Commissioned by The Space, Arts Council England and BBC
