Automatic CNC Coil Winder review & how to use (In English)

Introduction and Overview

In this video, the speaker provides a general review of a coil winder that they recently purchased. They discuss the pros and cons of the coil winder and share their experience using it.

Review of Coil Winder

  • The speaker bought the coil winder three weeks ago and wanted to share their experience with it.
  • There were limited options available for benchtop coil winders, and they chose this one over a more expensive option due to their lower usage requirements.
  • The coil winders are available from multiple sellers on eBay and Aliexpress, but since they come from China, there were concerns about the instructions and quality.
  • The instructions provided with the coil winder were difficult to understand, but the speaker managed to figure out how to use it through trial and error.
  • The coil winder is affordable compared to other workbench size models.
  • It does not require a computer to operate and can save up to 999 different programs for various types of coils.
  • The feed arm has a travel distance of 110 millimeters (4.3 inches) and is adjustable.
  • One drawback is that the measurements are in millimeters while the speaker uses American wire gauge in the US. However, this is not a significant issue for them.
  • The machine does not include an arbor shaft or mount for the bobbin being wound, so additional parts had to be purchased separately.

Mounting Bobbin on Arbor Shaft

Here, the speaker explains how they mounted the bobbin on an arbor shaft since it was not included with the machine.

Mounting Bobbin

  • The machine did not come with an arbor shaft or mount for winding bobbins.
  • The speaker purchased an 8-inch bolt with a 1/2-inch diameter and 13 threads per inch to use as an arbor shaft.
  • They had to modify the bolt by cutting off the head and turning it down on a lathe to fit inside the machine's hole.
  • The speaker also made centering cones from Delrin on the lathe to ensure proper alignment.

Adjustments and Improvements

In this section, the speaker discusses some adjustments and improvements they made to enhance their experience with the coil winder.

Adjustments and Improvements

  • The machine does not have a tension system or nozzles for different wire sizes.
  • The speaker used blocks with grooves for different wire sizes, but there were only six or seven holes available. They suggest purchasing additional nozzles for more flexibility.
  • While there are no major issues with the coil winder, there are certain limitations that need to be worked around.
  • Since there is no software included, calculations for things like outside diameter and resistance of coils need to be done separately using online aircore calculators.

Programming and Operation

Here, the speaker explains how to program and operate the coil winder.

Programming and Operation

  • To save a program, press "Start Step" as soon as you turn on the machine. Assign a number to it.
  • Use programming similar to other coil winders by setting parameters such as start position, width of bobbin, wire diameter (pitch), number of turns, etc.
  • The machine has indicator lights for various functions such as ready, turns, shift (starting position), width (bobbin width), pitch (wire diameter), etc.
  • Use arrow buttons or measurements with calipers to set parameters accurately.
  • The speaker demonstrates setting up a program by entering values for start position, bobbin width, wire diameter, and number of turns.
  • The machine also has options for slow start and slow end speeds.

Conclusion

In the final section, the speaker concludes their review of the coil winder and provides some additional information.

Final Thoughts

  • The coil winder is a useful tool for winding coils, especially considering its affordability compared to other models.
  • While there are some limitations and adjustments needed, it can still be effectively used with some workarounds.
  • The lack of included software means that calculations for specific parameters need to be done separately using online resources.
  • Overall, the speaker is satisfied with their purchase and finds the coil winder easy to use once they figured out how to operate it.

New Section

In this section, the speaker discusses the maximum RPM settings for high and low speeds, as well as the adjustable options. They also mention the preference for slower speeds and invite viewers to share any insights about the "fun" setting.

Maximum RPM Settings

  • The maximum RPM on the high-speed setting is 1650 RPM.
  • On the low-speed setting, it has been tested to reach only 100 RPM so far.
  • The instructions state that the RPM is adjustable, but this feature has not been figured out yet.

Speed Preferences

  • The speaker finds 100 RPM slow enough for their needs.
  • When using the high-speed setting, they set a zero on the low speed and vice versa.

New Section

In this section, the speaker explores various settings and buttons on the device.

Fun Setting and Other Buttons

  • The purpose of the "fun" setting is unknown to the speaker, and they invite viewers to share any insights in the comments.
  • After going through different settings, they return to the shift light button.
  • Pressing "edit" brings up a ready light.

New Section

In this section, adjustments are made to prepare for winding.

Feed Direction Adjustment

  • The feed direction light indicates that it will start from inside at the left side and feed towards right.
  • To reset it back to its starting position, pressing "Start" is sufficient.
  • It was previously out of position due to using arrows during width adjustment of bobbin.

New Section

In this section, preparations are made for winding by connecting wires and using double stick tape.

Wire Connection and Start

  • Double stick tape is used to secure the wire.
  • Pressing "Start" initiates the winding process.
  • The first five turns are slow, and then it switches to full speed.
  • The device counts the number of turns and displays the RPM.

New Section

In this section, potential issues during winding are discussed.

Winding Issues

  • There may be some slop in a hole that causes problems when reaching the edge during winding.
  • The last five turns go slow before completing the winding process.
  • The device shows the number of turns achieved.

New Section

In this section, additional considerations for using auto home and determining winding direction are mentioned.

Auto Home and Winding Direction

  • If using auto home, the device will move back to the home position after winding is complete. However, this may cause wire dragging.
  • The light indicates counterclockwise or clockwise rotation for winding direction.

New Section

In this section, a summary of key steps for twining a multi-layer coil is provided.

Summary of Steps

  • Turn on the unit.
  • To save settings, press "Start," enter a number (e.g., 1), press "Enter," then press "Edit" to enter various parameters such as start position, width, bobbin details, pitch, diameter/spacing between wires, and desired number of turns.
Video description

Bought this a few weeks ago on eBay for $570. So far everything is working well, still a few functions I haven't learned yet but I can wind a multilayer coil with ease. The biggest problem I had with buying this coil winder is I couldn't find any good instructions on it, so I made this video in an effort to help current owners and future buyers. If you have any questions or have figured out any functions I didn't explain in this video please share it in the comments. Although this winder works well winding multi layer coils with small wire is tricky. I think this is a problem with any cnc winder. The reason I think is because the wire has a hard time sitting flat across the layer below it so it will create small gaps... after many turns the small gaps add up and the wire ends up further away from the feeder, eventually it jumps and causes overlaps. Looking at other cnc coil winders I notice the same problem...so perhaps there is not a way to get a perfect multi layer coil? Still, This coil winder does a pretty good job. UPDATE-I recently received the pdf instructions for this coil winder. If you want a copy email me @ Bradkwfc@gmail.com and I'll be happy to send them to you. Here's the coil winder I bought. https://ebay.us/cTNtMd If you use the link I do earn a small commission, but I appreciate the support!
