Energy Management in Cable Car Operations

Integration of Energy Storage Systems

  • As a cable car operator, there is an increasing need to address energy issues. Freistand has developed a system specifically for stationary and aerial cable cars known as ENERGY Stories, which includes an energy storage system comprising an inverter and high-performance batteries that are durable and safe.
  • The energy storage system feeds directly into the drive mechanism and is fully integrated into the cable car control system. The energy management system determines when the battery should be charged or discharged.

Utilization of Photovoltaic (PV) Energy

  • PV energy can be utilized directly when the cable car is at a standstill for boarding and alighting passengers. Excess PV energy can be stored for later use, allowing it to power the cable car even when sunlight is not available.
  • During operation, if the motor needs to slow down, it acts as a generator producing energy that gets stored for future rides. This local reuse of energy reduces reliance on grid electricity and alleviates peak load demands on the power network.

Emergency Power Solutions

  • In case of a power failure during operation, cable cars can return to stations using stored energy from their battery systems instead of relying on diesel engines. This transition not only benefits the environment but also leads to cost savings for operators.

Simulation Tools for Optimal Energy Management

  • Freistand offers a simulation tool that allows operators to model their entire cable car operations. This tool helps determine the optimal size of both the energy storage system and PV installation while considering additional consumers like electric vehicle charging stations and restaurants.
