What is a Pulley?
Introduction to Pulleys
- A pulley is described as a simple machine that consists of a wheel with a groove in the middle, designed to pass a rope, cable, or similar material through it.
- The groove's purpose is to prevent the rope or band from slipping out of place. Pulleys also have an axle, body, and sometimes hooks.
Functionality and Types of Pulleys
- Pulleys are primarily used for lifting or lowering heavy objects, reducing the effort required for movement.
- There are three main types of pulleys:
- Fixed Pulley: The axle is fixed to a support; useful for changing the direction of the rope (e.g., drawing water from a well).
- Movable Pulley: One end of the rope is fixed while force is applied at the other end; commonly used in cranes or elevators.
- Compound Pulley: Combines both fixed and movable pulleys to further reduce lifting effort; prevalent in industrial applications.
