A Love Story Inspired by Real Events
The Forbidden Love of Caleri and Yesenia
- The story is set in 13th century Rome, focusing on a young Roman soldier named Caleri who falls deeply in love with a beautiful woman named Yesenia. However, soldiers are forbidden from having romantic relationships.
- The emperor believes that single soldiers, with fewer emotional ties, make better fighters. Despite this, Caleri and Yesenia continue to meet secretly, intensifying their love and desire to marry.
- Both characters are Catholic and feel an urgent need to receive God's blessing for their union due to the short life expectancy of the time. They seek a way to marry discreetly without attracting the emperor's wrath.
Seeking Help for Marriage
- Yesenia confides in a trusted friend who reveals she is secretly married to a soldier. This friend mentions a mysterious priest who defies the emperor’s rules by marrying young lovers clandestinely.
- Excited about this possibility, Yesenia rushes to tell Caleri about the priest. He shares her enthusiasm and convinces her they should visit him together.
The Secret Ceremony
- On the day of their meeting with the priest, guided by Yesenia's friend, they arrive at a hidden entrance of a church where they are led into an underground room beautifully decorated for ceremonies.
- The priest welcomes them warmly and prepares for their wedding ceremony. He assures them that this day marks the beginning of their eternal love as they exchange vows before God.
Consequences of Their Union
- After their marriage ceremony concludes successfully, curiosity leads them to ask the priest if he fears being discovered. He responds that he would sacrifice his life for others to receive God's grace.
- As they leave the church, they notice soldiers approaching; hiding away, they witness these soldiers capturing the priest as he has been discovered by the emperor.
A Tragic End
- The captured priest faces trial and is sentenced to death on February 14th in 270 AD. His name becomes synonymous with love and friendship celebrated worldwide today—Saint Valentine.
- Although this tale is fictionalized around real events concerning Saint Valentine’s secret marriages during Roman times, it highlights themes of love against societal constraints and martyrdom for faith.
