What is Autoimmunity?

Understanding Autoimmunity and Its Impact

  • Autoimmunity refers to a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own cells, leading to various diseases such as psoriasis, Crohn's disease, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and vitiligo.
  • The immune system is essential for defending the body against infections from bacteria and viruses, as well as controlling cell growth. It consists of molecular and cellular components that work together to maintain biological integrity.
  • Key players in the immune response include beta cells that produce antibodies. These antibodies identify and bind to antigens (foreign substances), facilitating their elimination from the body.
  • In cases of autoimmunity, the immune system fails to distinguish between self and non-self, resulting in an attack on healthy tissues. This can affect various systems including the nervous system, digestive tract, musculoskeletal system, and skin.
  • Autoimmune diseases are chronic conditions requiring lifelong treatment; however, current therapies are effective in managing symptoms and reducing disease impact.
